"Rajjo" is a Bollywood period drama film, set in the 1920s, and based on an epic poem of the same name. It explores gender dynamics, attitudes towards women's sexuality and widowhood. The story follows a young woman from a wealthy family whose husband has died during childbirth. She refuses to sit by idly as life passes her by so she sets out to live her life on her own terms – no matter what the consequences may be. It stars Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles with Rahul Bhat, Vinay Pathak, Pankaj Tripathi, Kumud Mishra and Anil George portraying supporting roles. The film was directed by Ankur Bhatia and produced by Aanand L. Rai under the banner of Colour Yellow Productions. It is an adaptation of a poem written by Amrita Pritam. Set to release on 5 July 2013, "Rajjo" was initially titled as "Rajjo: The Beautiful One". The film was shot entirely in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. The film was released on 26 August 2013 in India. The movie received mixed reviews from critics. Annapurna Purohit of "The Times of India" gave three stars out of five stating that "Rajjo is the story of an ordinary woman turned extraordinary by destiny". She added "the film explores the grey areas in society which are often deliberately ignored or made to remain vague by a happy ending, but a real woman standing up for her rights was a welcome change". Srijana Mitra Das of "Times Of India" stated "...the movie's focus, though, is misplaced. The poetry of Amrita Pritam is incidental to the movie. It is an excuse to bring together a stylish cast for an upscale period potboiler, which it does ably, if not entirely convincingly". Mohar Basu of Koimoi gave two stars out of five stating that "Rajjo is a beautifully crafted period drama set in the 1920s". He added "going by the director’s statement on his inspiration behind writing this script, one can conclude that while Ankur Bhatia has managed to capture the grandeur and beauty of Chanderi quite accurately; he hasn’t managed to capture the soul of its protagonist". Shubhra Gupta of "The Indian Express" gave three stars out of five stating that film is "set in the 1920s and much is made of its opulence and the display of wealth. Shooting on location certainly helps and there's a lot to look at". Rajjo opened average to mixed response from the audience as well as critics, and failed to repeat the success of its lead actors' previous films "Shootout at Wadala" and "Gangs Of Wasseypur". The movie proved to be a box office failure. The soundtrack for Rajjo has been composed by Pritam with lyrics penned by Swanand Kirkire. The soundtrack was released on 24 June 2013. cfa1e77820
